UrbaMamas take on raising an UrbaTot
February 22, 2012
It’s hard to believe how fast they really grow, one second you are nursing them and the next they are in their high chair throwing their food on the floor. But boy I wouldn’t change one thing about the past 18 months we have had with little e.
It’s truly amazing watching them explore the world now that they can walk. Now for us, we literally thought he might be two by the time he made his first steps but all of sudden like everyone told us it just happened. He started with a few steps around New Years, and then continued with more knee walking and then BAM, off he went just a few weeks ago!
So now it seems like everyday his speed increases and he realizes how many more things he can get into. Even when we “thought” we had the entire house baby proofed we were mistaken because he sure has found every nook and cranny that was not.
With the walking came the “freedom” phase and the ability to go from happy to tantrum in .2 seconds flat. I remember the first crying, tantrum we experienced and I think I was in shock! I thought who is this kid? And where did mine go? Well, it was mine and I had no clue what to do. Now that I understand he really is just struggling with trying to express himself since his vocabulary is still limited, I get it. Yes, when it’s in public it can be very embarrassing and sometimes he gets the best of us, but we pat ourselves on the back when we can get through the department store tantrum in one piece. We always say, “we did good, he didn’t break us apart.” Meaning, he didn’t win and we didn’t break down and forget that we have to be on the same page as parents and stay strong. That’s a tough one because he sure has won in the past and it’s not fun. So 3 cheers for us, we are making progress and stay together as team and realized we have to conquer it together.
The talking has been such a fun time for us, I mean who doesn’t want to hear their cute little voices belt out “mama” or “dada” it just melts your heart. Combine that word with your little tot running full speed with open arms saying mama and coming in for a big hug…AMAZING. I feel like everyday he learns new words, new skills, and he gets faster!
Sometimes I just stare at him with “awe” it’s just something I will never forget. For us, each phase in his life has been exciting but right now I would say, we love the tot phase. He can say things, he walks around and we get to explore the world at the 2+ foot level together. The first time we took him to walk outside on the sidewalk was adorable, he now is taking on more responsibilities and he realizes he can do so much more, walk the dog with mommy, answer the door when someone knocks, it’s endless for him.
Now as the words, “pee pee” and “poop” have entered the list of words little E can say, I think our next step will be potty training which as many of you I have no clue because I have never experienced that before. So when we host our Potty Training 411 in April I will be front row with my note pad and paper.
Our store has really evolved as little E has grown and now that I am expecting #2 it’s going to grow even more. Being a mom of two is completely different then just having one little one to run around with. So I wouldn’t say I am a baby expert, but I have first hand experience in being a mom but as for being a toddler expert, I am learning along with all of you and enjoying every minute of it.
